I am Going to the Sea, Clear the Path, 2024
Agarwal’s I am Going to the Sea, Clear the Path is a photographic and sound installation that spotlights the evolutionary history of endangered Indus and Ganges River dolphins, which reaches back over twenty-five million years, when the shallow Tethys Sea still covered the region, and before the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates resulted in South Asia as it is known today. Indigenous to the area’s freshwater bodies, the dolphins evolved sightless, and became accustomed to swimming freely in the murky, sediment-filled waters. Now, like the inhabitants of the nation-states governing their territory, they struggle to negotiate the water treaties, borders, barrages, and dams entangling the rivers’ flows. In addition to these challenges, they are also threatened by pollution, fishing nets, and poaching, while the distinctive system of high-frequency clicks through which they navigate has been severely hampered by the anthropogenic sounds of machines and motors.
Alongside the larger-than-life banner, which shows the dolphins frolicking in a dammed waterway, Agarwal presents a sonic element pairing the dolphins’ echolocation clicks with a recital of Rūmī’s verses:
Break the vase, tear the musk
I am going to the sea, clear the path
The earth is caving in from my tears
The sky is turning dark from my sorrow.
Though composed in the 13th century, the Sufi poet’s words speak to the plight and wishes of these blind yet all-seeing deep-time planetary beings who were arguably the original South Asians. Agarwal’s work invites people to reflect on the very recent violent histories causing their extinctions, and urges us to listen to their more-than-human echoes across borders, and desire to return to long-lost pasts.
