Nilofar Akmut
Nilofar Akmut’s “Plus One, Minus One,” a commission for LB03, emerges from thinking about climate change, printmaking, and embroidery, in collaboration with partners in London, Lahore, and Colombo, Sri Lanka. Fusing a non-linear performative narrative and experimental film, the artist references satellite images from the European Space Agency that shows the range of human progress and its effect on global warming that poses an existential threat on the very human who affects this world. Alongside the video are a number of objects used in the performance as well as six prints Akmut made in using satellite images as reference.
In addition to the installation, also on view is Water, Water, a compilation, . Hanging from the ceiling are prints realized with students and faculty at workshops in the National College of Arts in Lahore and Morley College and Hausprint in London, as well as embroidery made by artisans in Sri Lanka, all emerging from conversations about researching and taking action on climate change.
Nilofar Akmut (b. 1956, UK) is a Pakistani artist, performer, and poet. She graduated from the National College of Art, Lahore in 1979, and also studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art (BA, 1986), the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and Royal Holloway, University of London (MA, 2014). Akmut has been a regular contributor to Womanifesto, the artist-led biennial program in Thailand, since its inception in 1997. In addition, her work has also been featured at the Pavilion, Leeds (1992), Chiang Mai Social Installation (1995-96), Dhaka Art Summit (2014), and on the streets of Karachi (2000) and Lahore (2006).

Screening alternately
Water Water is the result of an ongoing collaboration between a group of international artists as part of Womanifesto. The compilation five individual films addressing the theme of water that combine to reflect on a complex universal concern this century at the time of global warming. Each film has its own distinctive style dealing with the dying of coral reefs, the aftermath of a tsunami, the struggle between man and animal for water, the destruction of a lake’s ecosystems and a glacier’s runoff.
