Elyas Alavi

In The Sound of Silence (#2), Alavi engages with the histories of Australia’s cameleers, laborers whose lives were intertwined with those of the animals they were brought on to handle, and who immigrated from South and West Asia to help colonize the continent’s arid outback. Though they played a vital role in transporting supplies and building infrastructure, and their music has resonated across the deserts for generations, these laborers continue to face discrimination. Through The Sound of Silence, Alavi honors the cameleers’ music and stories, as captured in oral histories with their descendants, and preserve their forgotten legacy. The project is a collaboration with the 2024 Biennale of Sydney.

 

Elyas Alavi (b.1982) is an Afghan-Australian artist, poet, and curator whose visual work spans painting, sculpture, installation, moving image, and performance. His practice often examines the complex intersections of race, displacement, gender, religion, and sexuality. More specifically, his work complicates histories in the South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) region and thinks through the links between the globalized condition, settler colonialism, and who is implicated in mobility and displacement of Black and Brown bodies. His work has been shown at the 4A in Sydney, UCCA in Beijing, MUSMA in Matera, Italy, among others. Alavi has also published three critically acclaimed poetry books, and translations of his poems appear in World Literature Today and PARSE.

دی ساؤنڈ آف سائیلنس (#2) میں علوی آسٹریلیا کے ساربانوں اور مزدوروں کی اہم تاریخ مرتب روشنی ڈالتے ہیں، جن کی زندگیاں ان جانوروں کے ساتھ جڑی ہوئی تھیں جنہیں سنبھالنے کے لیے انہیں لبلایا گیا تھا۔ ان ساربان اور مزدوروں نے جنوبی اور مغربی ایشیا سے ہجرت کی تھی۔ اگرچہ کہ انہوں نے آسٹریلیا کے مضافات کی طرقی میں اہم کردار ادا کیا، ان مزدوروں کو پھر بھی امتیازی سلوک کا سامنا کرنا پڑا۔ سائونڈ آف سائیلنس کے ذریعے، علوی ساربان کی موسیقی اور کہانیوں کو عزت دیتے ہیں، اور ان کی بھولی ہوئی میراث کو محفوظ رکھنے کی کوشش کو اجاگر کرتے ہیں۔ یہ منصوبہ سڈنی کے 2024 بئنالے کے تعاون سے مکمل کیا گیا ہے۔

الیاس علوی (پیدائش ۱۹۸۲) ایک افغان-آسٹریلین فنکار، شاعر، اور مہتمم ہیں۔ ان کا کام   پینٹنگ، مجسمہ سازی، ویڈیو، اور پرفارمنس جیسے مختلف ذرائع پر مشتمل ہے۔ ان کا کام اکثر نسل، نقل مکانی، جنس، مذہب اور جنسیت کے موضوعات پر روشنی ڈالتا ہے۔ وہ جنوبی مغربی ایشیا اور شمالی افریقہ کی تاریخ پر نظر ڈالتے ہوےُ استعمارِیت جیسے عالمی مسائل کو سامنے لاتے ہیں۔ ان کے فن کو سڈنی میں ۴اے، بیجنگ میں یو سی سی اے، اور اٹلی میں MUSMA جیسے مشہور مقامات پر دکھایا گیا ہے۔ علوی نے شاعری کی تین کتابیں بھی شائع کی ہیں۔

In The Sound of Silence (#2), Elyas Alavi has overlaid neon text onto five rubab instruments in a reimagining of the songs and poems that may have accompanied the cameleers on their travels in the Australian outback. The excerpts reference five different dialects and languages, acknowledging the diversity of their languages spoken by the cameleers, and are translated below: 

 

سائونڈ آف سائیلنس (#۲) میں، الیاس علوی نے پانچ رباب کے آلات پر نیون متن چڑھایا ہے، ان گانوں اور نظموں کا تصور کرتے ہوےَ جوساربان آسٹریلیا کے مضافات میں سفر کے دوران گاتے ہوں گے۔ نیچے دےَ گےَ اقتباسات پانچ مختلف بولیوں اور زبانوں کو پیش کرتے ہیں۔ یہ اقتباسات آسٹریلیا کے ساربانوں میں بولی جانے والی مختلف زبانوں کے تنوع کو پیش کرتے ہیں۔
