VASL, 2024 (series)

VASL is a collaboration between Alavi and Feroza Hakeem and Raheem Jaan, two Quetta-based Hazara artists. This collage series juxtaposes photographs of landscapes across Pakistan and Afghanistan with the Australian outback. As the curves of the mountains, rivers and landscapes of Pakistan and Afghanistan merge with those of the Australian desert, the artist highlights the invisible connections between the two locations, both of which hold significance to the history of the cameleers. The photographs were taken by Elyas during his trips and Hakeem’s paintings are used to create calligraphy letters and words. The letters and words are drawn from a cameleer’s notebook now kept at the Broken Hill Mosque Museum in Australia.  

 

The series also includes three portrait paintings by Raheem Jaan. Two depict cameleers: one a local cameleer from Quetta, Balochistan, and the other Dervish Bejah Baloch, a well-known cameleer who lived and died in Australia. The third portrait is of Raheem’s grandfather, symbolising the displacement of the Hazara people, who have been forced to leave Afghanistan since the early 20th century.

وصل الیاس علوی کا فیروزہ حکیم اور رحیم جان کے تعاون سے بنایا گیا فنپارہ ہے۔ اس کولاج سیریز میں پاکستان اور افغانستان کے مناظر کو آسٹریلیا کے صحراؤں کے ساتھ ملایا گیا ہے۔ ان مناظر کو ملا کر یہ فنپارہ ساربانوں کی اہم تاریخی جگہوں کے تعلق کو واضح کرتا ہے۔ الیاس علوی نے تصاویر کھینچیں، اور حکیم نے  اپنی مصوری کو آسٹریلوی میوزیم میں پائے جانے والے ساربانوں کے خطوط پر مبنی خطاطی بنانے کے لیے استعمال کیا۔ اس سیریز میں رحیم جان کے تین پورٹریٹ بھی شامل ہیں، جس میں سے ایک پورٹریٹ ہزارہ کے لوگوں کی نقل مکانی کی علامت ہے۔
