Lost Shadows, 2021

Lost Shadows is a video recording of a shadow puppetry performance that tells the story of an agrarian village whose life was irrevocably altered by the advent of industrial agriculture. Though it has freed traditional crop farmers from the seasonal famine (Monga), the introduction of industrial hybrid crops in the 1980s displaced indigenous seeds, and along with it ancestral agricultural knowledge, and the animals and other spirits that were part of the village life. Trees in the forest were cut down to make way for fields of monoculture crops. Use of large volumes of fertilizers and chemicals polluted the water and soil, which could no longer hold nutrients on their own. Herbicides killed off local plants, and pesticides drove away birds and bees. Under the effects of climate change, rivers were drying up and groundwater level declined yearly due to over reliance by local farmers. Non-human beings left the stage one by one.

Drawing on the traditional music and shadow puppetry of the community, Lost Shadows is an attempt to connect with all these lost beings. In the artist’s words, ‘the disappeared are still here as shadows, as if returned from the past to tell the stories of loss. But they are mute, we are unable to hear them.’ Despite the palpable sense of melancholy, not all is irretrievable; starting with mourning, the work is yet a guide intimating the community towards future repair and restoration.

Gidree Bawlee Foundation of Arts was co-founded by artist Kamruzzaman Shadhin and Salma Jamal Moushum in 2001 in an area of northwest Bangladesh with a rich hybrid culture of indigenous traditions imparted by waves of settlers displaced historically by colonization, the privatization of land and climate change. Gidree Bawlee’s practice is rooted in the local community and nourished by experimental processes, such as youth craft workshop and puppetry, merging ancient cultural heritage with contemporary concerns.

لاہور بینالے کے ایماء پر فطرت کے بارے ایک بار پھر سوچ بچار کی کاوش 

 

گم شدہ سائے ایک پتلی تماشا کی پرفارمنس پر مشتمل ایک ویڈیو ریکارڈنگ ہے جس میں ایک زراعتی گاؤں کی کہانی دکھائی گئی جس کی زندگی صنعتی زراعت کی آمد نے ہمیشہ کے لیے بدل ڈالی۔ اگرچہ اس نے روایتی طریقے سے کاشت کرنے والے کاشتکاروں کو موسمی قحط (مونگا) سے بچا لیا مگر  1980 کے عشرے میں متعارف ہونے والی صنعتی مخلوط فصلوں نے مقامی بیجوں کو بے دخل کر لیا اور اس کے ساتھ آباؤ اجداد کے زراعتی علم، اور جانوروں اور دیگر روحوں کو بھی جو کہ دیہاتی زندگی کا حصہ تھے۔ جنگلوں میں سے درخت کاٹ دیے گئے تاکہ ایک ہی قسم کی فصلوں کی کاشت کے لیے کھیت ہموار کیے جا سکیں۔ 

روایتی موسیقی اور کمیونٹی کے پتلی تماشے کے کھیل سے جنم لینے والے گم شدہ سائے ان تمام کھوئی ہوئی چیزوں سے جُڑنے کی ایک سعی ہے۔ فن کار کے بقول، ”گم شدہ ابھی بھی سائے کی شکل میں یہاں ہیں، جیسے کہ وہ ماضی سے پلٹے ہوں خسارے کی کہانیاں بتانے کے لیے۔ مگر وہ چُپ ہیں۔ ہم انہیں نہیں سن سکتے۔” تاہم مردہ دلی کے شدید احساس کے باوجود،  سب کچھ ضائع نہیں ہوا۔ ابھی بہت کچھ ہم واپس لا سکتے ہیں: یہ کاوش مستقبل کی اصلاح اور بحالی کے لیے بصیرت فراہم کرتی ہے۔
