The practice of Hong Kong-based Natalie Lo Lai Lai as artist and as part of the organic farming community Sangwoodgoon is rooted in care for the local environment.  Since being founded over a decade ago, the collective has been engaged in working with the land and community at their farm near the border with Shenzhen. They have learned to follow the rhythm of the harvest. In her artistic work, Lo responds to the relationships between humans and more-than-human beings that define the ever-changing agricultural cycle, as can be seen in A Messenger – Passerby in Our Battlefields, in which the many winged neighbors share space with Sangwoodgoon.  She notes that whereas “farmers have always rooted themselves and their produce firmly in the earth[…] others are uprooted and transplanted, flying calmly through the sky and navigating the currents with the aid of intuition, so as not to plunge into the mud.”

Natalie Lo Lai Lai, born in Hong Kong in 1983, has a farming practice where she uses photography, video and installation as a means to interact with nature, in addition to engagement with topics of food, fermentation, surveillance, and meditation. Lo’s works have been exhibited internationally in institutions in San Francisco, Paris, Berlin, London, Naha, Dresden, Basel, Johannesburg, Yogyakarta, Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan.

ہانگ کانگ کی شہری نٹالی لو لائی لائی بطورِ فنکار اور مکمل طور فطری طریقے سے کا شت کاری کرنے والی کمیونٹی سینگ وُڈ گُون (Sangwoodgoon) کے رکن کی حیثیت سے مقامی ماحول کے تحفظ کے لیے کوشاں ہیں۔ اپنے قیام کے روز سے یہ ادارہ شنزن کی سرحد کے قریب کھیتوں میں کاشت کاری اور کمیونٹی کی دیگر سرگرمیوں کے ساتھ منسلک ہے۔ انہوں نے فصلوں کی پیداوار کے قدرتی راگ سے راگ ملانا سیکھ لیا ہے اور لو نے اپنے فن کے ذریعے، کائنات کی دیگر انواع کے ساتھ انسانوں کے قریبی تعلق کو اجاگر کیا ہے۔ یہی تعلق ہمارے زراعتی دور کو تشکیل دیتا ہے جو کہ مسلسل تبدیلی کے عمل سے دوچار ہے۔ اس حقیقت کا مشاہدہ ہم ایک پیامبر- ہمارے جنگ کے میدانوں میں راہی میں ہم کئی پنچھی ہمسائے دیکھ سکتے ہیں جو سین وڈ گون کے ساتھ مل جل کر رہ رہے ہیں۔ وہ کہتی ہیں کہ ” کسانوں کی اپنی زندگی اور فصلیں تو بڑی اچھی طرح زمین کے ساتھ جڑی ہوئی ہیں {} جبکہ دیگر انواع اپنی مٹی سے بے دخل اور دربدر ہو کر آسمان میں خاموشی سے اڑان بھر رہے ہیں اور وجدان کی مدد سے لہروں کی کھوج لگاتے ہیں تاکہ کہیں کیچڑ میں نہ گِر پڑیں۔ 

1983 میں ہانگ کانگ میں جنم لینے والی نٹالی لو لائی لائی کھیتی باڑی کرتی ہیں جس دوران وہ فطرت کے قریب تر ہونے کے لیے تصویر کشی، ویڈیو اور انسٹالیشن کا استعمال کرتی ہیں۔ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ وہ غذا، اُبال، نگرانی، اور مراقبے میں بھی بہت دلچسپی رکھتی ہیں۔ ان کی تخلیقات کی سان فرانسسکو، پیرس، برلن، لندن، ناہا، ڈریسڈن، بیسل، جوہانسبرگ، یوگیاکاترا، بیجنگ، شنگائی، اور تائیوان۔
