Mebuyan’s Colony, 2024

New’s Mebuyan installations grow out of the native Mindanawon’s abiding interest in indigenous Filipino mythology, fantasy, and science, mixed with a dash of old-fashioned stagecraft. First realized for Burning Man and at Art in the Park in Makati, the Philippines, in 2021, each incarnation re-imagines Mebuyan, the Bagobo goddess of death and fertility, as a being from outer space, descending in a mothership made of steel, bamboo, salvaged plastic water bottles, and household elements.  The cycles of life and death that the indigenous deity represents are given a contemporary take, with the colony’s many globes woven together from organic bamboo and discarded plastics.  As the artist notes, the project accommodates “questions about sustainable production, circular economy, the life cycle of materials, how to actively address the solution of discards and wastes and how these can be for art-making or constructions.”

Leeroy New (b. 1986) is a Manila-based artist whose practice spans art, film, theater, and fashion, demonstrating throughout the creative possibilities of everyday and salvaged materials. His creations have been worn by Lady Gaga, among others, and his interactive installations and public artworks have been exhibited at the Singapore Biennial (2008), the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (2009), the Biennale of Sydney (2022), and many other locations.

دونوں لاہور بینالے فاؤنڈیشن کی جانب سے کمیشن شدہ

نیو کی مِیبویان کالونی ایک ایسا فن پَارہ ہے جو فلپائن کی قدیم دیومالا، تخیلات، سائنس اور اسٹیج سازی کا ملغوبہ ہے۔ یہ فن پَارہ  پہلی بار جلتے انسان کے میلے اور مکاتی، فلپائن میں 2021 میں بنائی گئی۔ ہر نئی پیشکش کے ساتھ، مِیبویان کی کالونی ایک نئے روپ میں نظر آتی ہے۔ مِیبویان جو باغوبو کی اساطیر کی موت اور زرخیزی کی دیوی ہے، ایک خلائی جہاز میں آسمانوں سے اترتی ہے۔ یہ خلائی جہاز لوہے، بانس، پلاسٹک کی بوتلوں اور گھریلو سامان سے مزین ہوتی ہے۔ حیات اور ممات کی نمائندہ دیوی، بانس اور پلاسٹک سے بنی ہوئی نظر آتی ہے۔ جیسے کہ فنکار کہتے ہیں، یہ فنپار “پائیدار پیداوار، گردشی معیشت، اشیاء کی زندگی اور استعمال، اور ضائع شدہ مواد کے فنپاروں میں استعمال پر نظر ڈالتا ہے۔” 

مِیبویان کی کالونی کے ساتھ، نیو لاہور کی خلائی مخلوقیں بھی پیش کر رہے ہیں۔ یہ ایک پرفارمنس ہوگی جس میں نیو کے بنائے گئے لباس شامل ہوں گے۔ یہ لباس، پلاسٹک اور گھریلو سامان سے تیار کردہ ہیں۔ یہ پرفارمنس شالامار باغ اور مال روڈ پر، بینالے کے افتتاحی ہفتے میں دکھائی جائے گی۔ لیروئی نیو (پیدائش 1986) مقیمِ منیلا کا فنکاری تجربہ آرٹ، فلم، تھیٹر اور فیشن کا احاطہ کیے ہوئے ہے۔ ان کا بنیادی مقصد، روزمرہ کے استعمال کی اشیاء اور ردی سامان کا استعمال ہے۔ ان کے بنائے ہوئے لباس کو لیڈی گاگا جیسی شہرۂ آفاق ہستی نے زیبِ تن کیا ہے، جبکہ ان کی دیگر فنپارے سنگاپور بینالے (2008)، فوکوکا ایشیائی ٹریینالے (2009)، سڈنی بینالے (2022) اور دیگر مواقع پر دکھائی گئی ہیں۔
