Speaking to the Ground, 2024

Daniel Otero Torres’s Speaking to the Ground is an installation of eight tall terracotta vessels, commissioned for the Lahore Biennale. It pays homage to the ancient irrigation system, known as ollas in the Americas and as matka on the Subcontinent. These unglazed clay pots, revered for their efficiency in irrigation, are partially buried in the soil with their upper parts exposed to facilitate watering. Echoing the use of mitti (earth) and pani (water) across other works in LB03, the artist draws attention to the essential connection and interdependence of natural elements, for earth in the form of the pitchers becomes a conduit and preserver of water. Otero Torres’s installation offers a monumental but subtle reminder of the history of human coexistence with the elements, one that connects Asia to the Americas. 

اسپیکنگ ٹو دی گراؤنڈ، ٢٠٢٤

لاہور بینالے کے لیے ٹوریس نے اسپیکنگ ٹو دی گراؤنڈ تخلیق کی، جو آٹھ ٹیراکوٹا یعنی مٹی کے برتنوں کی ایک تنصیب ہے جو کہ قدیم آبپاشی کے نظام سے متاثر ہے۔ یہ برتن امریکہ میں اولاس اور برصغیر میں مٹکا کے نام سے جانے جاتے ہیں۔ یہ مٹی کے برتن زمین اور پانی کے درمیان تعلق کو نمایاں کرتے ہیں، جو انسانیت اور قدرتی عناصر کے رشتے کی علامت ہیں۔

فن کار ڈینیئل اوٹیرو ٹوریس بگوٹا (پیدائش ۱٩٨٥) میں پیدا ہوئے جبکہ اس وقت پیرس میں مقیم ہیں۔ وہ مجسمہ سازی، سرامکس، اور ڈرائنگ جیسے فننی زرائع کے ساتھ کام کرتے ہیں۔ ان کا فن مزاحمت اور انقلاب کے موضوعات کوسامنے لاتا ہے۔ اپنے فن کے ذریعے وہ پسماندہ لوگوں اور مقامی کمیونٹیز پر سرمایہ داری کے پڑنے والے منفی اثرات پر توجہ دیتا ہے۔ وہ فطرت اور عالمی سیاست کے درمیان تعلق پر سوالات اٹھاتے ہیں۔ ان کا کام عالمی سطح پر وینس بینالے اور جمیل آرٹ سینٹر جیسے مقامات پر پیش کیا جا چکا ہے۔ لاہور بینالے ان کی جنوبی ایشیا میں پہلی نمائش ہے۔

 

Shalimar Flow, 2024

Shalimar Flow is a site-specific intervention at the Shalimar Gardens fountains.  Like his previous work, La Lluvia, which was inspired by the ‘making do’ resourcefulness of  indigenous communities in Colombia who, despite living in a water abundant region, repurpose containers to funnel and collect rainwater, as access to clean water was threatened by pollution from illegal gold mining. Relocating this work to Punjab, a water-scarce region, the artist playfully comments on the ostentatious water works in the Shalimar Gardens by introducing vernacular objects to collect and channel water.

شالیمار فلو بینالے کے لیے ایک اور فن پارہ ہے، جس میں ٹوریس نے لاہور شالامار باغ کے فواروں کے تصور کو پیش کیا ہے۔ یہ انہوں نے روزمرہ کی اشیاء کے ذریعے پانی کو منفرد انداز میں نکال کر پیش کیا۔ یہ فن پارہ ان کے کولمبیا میں پہلے سے بنائے گئے کام کی عکاسی کرتا ہے، جس میں پانی کی قلت اور آلودگی کے مسائل پر روشنی ڈالی گئی تھی۔

Daniel Otero Torres (b.1985) is an artist born in Bogotá and based in Paris, who works with sculpture, ceramics, as well as drawing, which underlies his practice. Interested in notions of resistance and revolution —exemplified by marginalized or ignored groups that have played an essential role in recent history— his work  draw attention to the harmful effects of capitalism on biodiversity and indigenous peoples, while posing questions about links between nature and global politics. Otero Torres’ art has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Lyon Biennale, Jameel Art Center in Dubai, and MACAAL in Marrakech, and more.  This is the artist’s first exhibition in South Asia.
