How to Become a Rock – a fall, a poem, a wish, a score, a manifesto, 2024

How to Become a Rock is a project that pays attention to and turns towards the earth body and its tectonic formations. Emerging from an ongoing research and engagement within the Karakoram mountains, I began working on this chapter last year during a residency in Paris at the Cité des Arts. In collaboration with Paulina Ruiz Carballido, a Mexican-French dancer, we turned and returned to our own bodies in order to think through and understand the relationships and entanglements between the human body and these ecological bodies. How can we embody and understand these formations, their slowness, their outwardly stillness, their materialization, their weight, their bearing, their surface and what lies within? How can we see them in a likeness, and see ourselves in a likeness to them? And how can this process of slowing down and our attempts to embody, allow us, our body and our mind, to feel closer to them, and rest nearby.

The project is accompanied by a set of typewritten drawings/text/score/manifesto; a performance video shot in Passu- Gilgit Baltistan, with music composed and produced by Mujeeb Ruzik; a drawing in collaboration with Faheem Abbas working through relation to inscriptions and drawings on surfaces of rocks and caves through time and human civilisation; and a 15cm high mound of powdered red brick.

چٹان کیسے بنا جائے ایک ایسا منصوبہ ہے جو کہ ارضیاتی جسم اور اس کے پہاڑی حصوں کی طرف توجہ دلاتا ہے۔  قراقرم کے پہاڑوں پر تحقیق کے دوران میرے ذہن میں یہ خیال پیدا ہوا اور پھر گذشتہ برس شہرِ فنون، پیرس میں اپنے قیام کے دوران میں نے اس پر کام کرنا شروع کیا۔ میکسیکی – فرانسیسی رقاصہ پاؤلا روئز کاربالیڈو کے ساتھ مل کر، ہم اپنے اجسام کی طرف واپس پلٹے تاکہ غورو فکر کر سکیں اور سمجھ سکیں کہ انسانی جسم اور ارضیاتی اجسام کا آپس میں کیا تعلق اور واسطہ ہے۔ ہم ان صورتوں کے پیکر کس طرح بن سکتے ہیں اور ان کے بارے میں سمجھ بوجھ حاصل کر سکتے ہیں۔ ان کی سست روی، ان کا بیرونی جامد پن، ان کی مادیت، ان کا وزن، ان کی برداشت، ان کی سطح اور ان کے اندر کیا ہے؟ ہماری ان کے ساتھ اور ان کی ہمارے ساتھ کیا مماثلت ہے۔ اور سست روی کا یہ عمل، اور ان کے روپ میں ڈھلنے کی ہماری کوششوں سے ہمارا جسم اور ذہن ان سے قربت کیسے محسوس کر سکتا اور ان کے قریب کیسے رہ سکتا ہے۔
