Ladhamba Tayem; Future Continuous, 2023

Subash Thebe Limbu [ᤋᤠᤱᤛᤠᤱ Tangsang (Sky)] is an artist from Yakthung Nation (Limbuwan) from what is currently know as Eastern Nepal, and currently based between Kathmandu and London. He works with sound, film, music, performance, painting and podcast to tackle socio-political issues and struggles of resistance through a form of speculative narration that he calls Adivasi Futurism, which reorients and redefines progress by reimagining Indigenous people as the creators of sustainable interplanetary and interstellar civilisations rooted in heritage. Thebe Limbu’s works have been exhibited and screened in such exhibitions as the Kathmandu Triennial, Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, and the Dhaka Art Summit.

The title of the work Ladhamba Tayem; Future Continuous borrows from a verbal inflection that specifies time of action or state where ‘Tayem’ is future and ‘Ladhamba’ is continuous in the artist’s native language. Filmed in the Himalayas, the film follows a conversation between two indigenous figures from different historical timelines, the first an 18th century Yakthung warrior called Kangsore fighting the colonial army, and the other an astronaut and time traveler from the distant future. They discuss the space-time continuum from their perspectives, and in doing so, ask the viewers—who exist between the past and future—to investigate their own relationship to time. The space-time traveler prophesies what the future could look like, while the warrior reminds us of the continued struggle against colonialism and struggles we shall overcome.

سباش تھیبے لمبو (پیدائش 1981) مشرقی نیپال کی یکتھانگ قوم (لیمبوان) سے تعلق رکھتے ہیں اور کٹھمنڈو اور لندن میں مقیم ہیں۔ ان کا کام آواز، فلم، موسیقی، پرفارمنس، پینٹنگ اور پوڈکاسٹنگ جیسے مختلف شعبوں میں پھیلا ہوا ہے۔ وہ اپنے کام میں سماجی و سیاسی مسائل اور مزاحمت کو قیاس آرائی بیانیے کے ذریعے فروغ دیتیں ہیں، جسے وہ “آدیواسی فیوچرززم” کا نام دیتیں ہیں۔ ان کا فن نیپال کے مقامی لوگوں کو کچھ یوں پیش کرتا ہے کہ جیسے وہ وراثت میں بسے سیاروں کی تہذیبوں کے تحفظ پسندانہ تخلیق کار ہوں۔ لمبو کا کام کٹھمنڈو ٹرائینیل، ایشیا پیسیفک ٹرائینیل اور ڈھاکہ آرٹ سمٹ جیسی نمائشوں میں پیش کیا جا چکا ہے۔

ان کی فلم ” لدھمبا تایم؛ فیوچر کنٹینیوئس“ وقت کی تحقیق دو مقامی کرداروں کے درمیان مکالمہ کے ذریعے دکھاتی ہے، جس میں اٹھارہویں صدی کا یکتھانگ جنگجو اور مستقبل کا خلاباز جو وقت کا مسافر بھی ہے۔ ہمالیہ میں فلمائی گئی اس فلم میں وہ خلا اور وقت کے تسلسل پر گفتگو کرتے ہیں اور ناظرین کو اپنے وقت کے ساتھ تعلق پر غور کرنے کی دعوت دیتے ہیں۔ اس فلم میں خلاباز مستقبل کا تصور پیش کرتا ہے، جب کہ جنگجو نوآبادیاتی نظام کے خلاف جاری جدوجہد پر روشنی ڈالتا ہے۔
