Zheng Bo

Phoenix, 2024

For Phoenix, Zheng Bo collaborated with seven Pakistani farmers living and working on a date palm farm outside Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to make a dance. The work celebrates the beauty of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) and the skill of these stewards, highlighting intimate relations cultivated over millennia, vital to the economy and culture of the region.

At the same time, in working with immigrant laborers on the piece, Zheng also draws attention to the contribution of diasporic farmers to the agriculture of the region, as well as the phenomenon of climate-induced migration, which has led many farmers to seek better lives overseas, and which in the coming decades could affect over a billion people, most of whom are in Asia.

Zheng Bo (b. 1974)  grew up in Beijing and now lives on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. Guided by Daoist wisdom, he grows weedy gardens, living slogans, eco-queer films, and ecosocialist workshops. The diverse projects, alive and entangled, constitute a garden where he collaborates with human and nonhuman thinkers and activists. His ecological art practice contributes to an emergent planetary indigeneity. In 2021, the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, featured his work in a one-person exhibition, Wanwu Council, and he has also taken part in a number of biennials, including those at Shanghai (2016), Taipei (2018), Liverpool Biennial (2021), and the Venice and Sydney Biennales (both 2022).

اس کے علاوہ، اس منصوبے پر تارکین وطن کے ساتھ کام کر کے زینگ نے علاقے کی زراعت کے لیے تارکین وطن کسانوں کی خدمات اور  موسمی تبدیلیوں کی وجہ سے ہونے والی ہجرت کی طرف بھی توجہ دلائی ہے۔

زینگ بو بینجنگ میں پلے بڑھے اور اب جزیرہ لانٹاؤ ہانگ کانگ میں رہائش پذير ہیں۔ تاؤ ازم کے فلسفے سے متاثر زینگ جڑی بوٹیوں والے باغات اگاتے ہیں، جیتے جاگتے نعرے تخلیق کرتے، منفرد قسم کی ماحول دوست منفرد فلمیں بناتے اور ماحول و عوام دوست ورکشاپس کا اہتمام کرتے ہیں۔ جاندار اور پچیدہ قسم کے متنوع منصوبے ایک باغ کا روپ دھارتے ہین جہاں وہ انسانی اور غیر انسانی مفکرین اور کارکنان کے ساتھ مل کر کام کرتے ہیں۔ میں مارٹن گروپیئس باؤ، برلن نے سولو نمائش وانوو کونسل میں ان کے فن کو پیش کیا ، اور انہوں نے شنگھائی ، تائی پے ، لیورپول بینالے  اور وینس اور ‎سڈنی بینالے میں بھی حصہ لیا تھا۔
