Feint Recollections of a Time Beyond is a digital render of a solitary Iraqi date palm tree, a national icon of Iraq, gently swaying in the waters of the Euphrates.  After the ancient city Anah was flooded in 1987, many palm trees stood half-submerged, peering above the water line, a story recounted many times by the artist’s father. By contrast, water levels in the area recently have dropped so much as a result of severe drought and damming upstream that long-submerged Assyrian-era tombs have now resurfaced. Feint Recollections thus condenses inherited memories from the artist’s father, who grew up on the banks of the Euphrates, with the subsequent rise and fall of a river that nurtured ancient Mesopotamia, a cradle for human civilization, in the age of the Anthropocene.

 

Basil Al-Rawi is a Kuwait-born, Cork-based artist who works with photography, moving images, and digital simulation to explore memory, identity, politics, and reality. His practice involves reworking archival materials to create virtual connections with the past and expand photographic narratives.  He has exhibited at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, the Photographers’ Gallery, London, and elsewhere.

باسل الراوی کا منصوبہ فینٹ ریکلیکشنز آف اے ٹایُم بییانڈ ایک عراقی کھجور کے درخت کی ڈیجیٹل تصویر پیش کرتا ہے۔ عراقی کھجور کا درخت عراق کا قومی نشان ہے، اور یہ ڈیجیٹل تصویراس درخت کو دریائے فرات کے کنارے جھومتا دکھاتی ہے۔ یہ فنپارہ 1987 میں اناہ شہر میں آنے والے سیلاب کی عکاسی کرتا ہے۔ اب اس شہر میں خشک سالی کی وجہ سے قدیم مقبرے دوبارہ ظاہر ہو چکے ہیں جو پہلے پانی میں چھپے ہوئے تھے۔ باسل الراوی اس فنپارے میں اپنے والد کی ذاتی یادوں کا تعلق اس علاقے میں ہونے والی ماحولیاتی تبدیلیوں کے ساتھ جوڑتے ہیں۔ اس فنپارے کے ذریعے ہمییں فرات جیسے تاریخی دریا پر موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے اثرات کے بارے میں آگاہی ملتی ہے۔
