Weaving footage from diverse hydrographies such as the Colorado, the Yaqui, the Xingu, the Spree, and the Magdalena Rivers, Carolina Caycedo’s To Stop Being a Threat and to Become a Promise (2017) contrasts the ancestral and rural ‘campesino’ lifestyle found throughout the Americas with extractivist approaches to water and land by juxtaposing encountered perspectives and understandings of what territory is, and how it may be inhabited. Over the course of the video, the ancestral view casts a visual spell on the extractive one, making it wobble, shake, unfold, and eventually transform it into a spiritual vision.

Carolina Caycedo (b. 1978) is a London-born, Colombian artist who received her MFA from USC in 2012, and is based in Los Angeles. Her art practice revolves around environmental research and activism, with a focus on the future of shared resources, environmental justice, energy transition, and cultural biodiversity. The artist uses drawing, photography, film, and performance as vehicles for research and action, often championing environmental justice through demonstrations of resistance and solidarity. Her work has been shown in institutions around the world, including at the Venice Biennale (2003), MoMA (2023-24), and the Vincent Price Art Museum, as part of Pacific Standard Time (2024). She is a member of the Los Angeles Tenants Union and the Rios Vivos Colombia Social Movement.
