Nabi & Rehman’s collaborative project Mitti, Mazdoori, Mahaul is an ongoing dialogue with the ground and its realities in and around Lahore. It attends to materiality, memory, and practices to think about how soil counter-narrates the histories of improvement, and how the earth shapeshifts and resists demarcation — attaching and unlatching itself from solidity.

As they observe, whatever happens to the earth happens to our bodies. Yet, little attention is paid to soil, matter, and telluric rhythms. Amid the patchwork of asphalt and concrete, which define urban experience, are also the river beds, floodplains, brick kilns, waste dumps, gardens, forests, old trees, and compost pits. Soils carry histories, memories, and testimonies, which speak of colonial erasures but also of care and resistance.

The project is enriched by encounters across many sites and interlocutors: artists, architects, craftspeople, maalis (gardeners), historians, construction workers, geologists, farmers, archaeologists, activists, and others. Their project hosts a gathering of soil from across Lahore as an unstable archive and catalyst for reflection and action. Accompanying artworks trace the material and social lives of soil across these sites, diversifying stories about urbanization, labor, ritual, and more-than-human relations — narratives from the peripheries of tabulated history, dissolving into a transforming earth.

Hira Nabi (b. 1987) is a filmmaker and artist originally from Lahore. She uses cinema, performance, and writing to think with her collaborators on the disappearance of multi-worlds, afterlives, plural temporalities, labor infrastructures, linking histories of colonial extraction with ongoing violence, and articulating gestures of care to find justice and dignity, alongside survival. In her work, witnessing is a charged act of radical possibility, holding immense potential for collective responsibility and love. 

Nida Rehman (b. 1979) is a Pakistani-born urban geographer and architect, and Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Rehman examines the histories, politics, and ecologies of urban landscapes, and how people engage urban nature to create possibilities for change. She explores these issues through scholarship on cultural landscapes and political ecologies in Lahore, Pakistan; collaborative and public-facing work as co-founder of the South Asia Urban Climates collective; and community-centered approaches to environmental and spatial justice in the Mon Valley.

حرا نبی اور ندا رحمان نے مل کر ایک مشترکہ منصوبہ مٹی، مزدوری، ماحول پر کام کیا ہے۔ اس منصوبے کے ذریعے انہوں نے دکھایا ہے کہ زمین خود حدود کے خلاف مزاحمت کرتی ہے اور نوآبادیاتی دور میں ہونے والے استحصال اور تاریخی تشدد کی علامت بن کر سامنے آتی ہے۔ مٹی، مزدوری، ماحول کا منصوبہ شہری ترقی کے وہ پہلو سامنے لاتا ہے جن پر کم توجہ دی جاتی ہے، جیسے دریا اور سیلابی میدان، اینٹوں کے بھٹے، کچرے کے ڈھیر، باغات، اور جنگلات۔ اس پراجیکٹ سے ظاہر ہوتا ہے کہ یہ مقامات نوآبادیاتی دور کے سامنے مزاحمت کی صلاحیت رکھتے ہیں۔ یہ منصوبہ مختلف شعبوں کے تعاون سے بنایا گیا ہے، جن میں فنکار، مورخین، تعمیراتی مزدور، اور ماہرین ارضیات شامل ہیں۔ اس پراجیکٹ کے لیےُ لاہور کے مختلف حصوں سے مٹی جمع کی گئی ہے، تاکہ وہ مل ک زمین میں پوشیدہ پیچیدہ سماجی، ماحولیاتی، اور تاریخی تعلقات کی عکاسی کریں۔

 ندا رحمان (پیدائش ۱۹۷۹) ایک شہری جغرافیہ دان اور ماہرِ تعمیرات ہیں جو کارنیگی میلن یونیورسٹی میں بطورِ اسسٹنٹ پروفیسر خدمات سر انجام دے رہی ہیں۔ ندا رحمان کا کام ماحولیات، شہری سرگرمیوں، اور لاہور سے تعلق رکھنے والے شہری بنیادی مسائل پر توجہ دیتا ہے۔ ان کا مشترکہ منصوبہ مٹی کی مادی حیثیت، اس کی یادداشت، مزدوری، اور مزاحمت کے ساتھ تعلقات کو پیش کرتا ہے۔
