Promised Land, 2022-23
Promised Land is a three-channel interactive video game project that unfolds the narrative of the European history of colonialism by addressing the notion of land and landscape and how it is expropriated, exploited, and romanticized in both digital and material worlds. The work is a kind of film in which the player’s navigation determines the storyline, and allows the visitor to wander through hypnotic and immersive landscapes meticulously designed and drawn by the artist with different computer programs. The artist painstakingly constructs these landscapes with reference to colonial film footage in the collection of EYE Film Museum, Amsterdam.
Imran Channa (b.1981) is a Pakistani visual artist exploring concepts using installation, drawing, painting, digital and moving images, and sculptures. Examining documentary processes, and questioning how history is documented, presented, and manipulated via photography, archaeology, and literature form the core concerns of his practice. Channa’s work has been shown internationally, such as at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, Mohatta Palace Museum in Karachi, the Third International Festival of Contemporary Art at Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Algeria. Channa lives and works between Pakistan and the Netherlands.
