As in her work as a farmer, the practice of Hong Kong-based Natalie Lo Lai Lai as artist is rooted in care for the local environment, responding to the relationships between humans and more-than-human beings that define the ever-changing agricultural cycle. This can be seen in A Messenger – Passerby in Our Battlefields, in which the many winged neighbors share space with the Sangwoodgoon collective. The artist notes that whereas “farmers have always rooted themselves and their produce firmly in the earth[…] others are uprooted and transplanted, flying calmly through the sky and navigating the currents with the aid of intuition, so as not to plunge into the mud.”
Lo Lai Lai Natalie (b. 1983, Hong Kong) received the WMA Commission Grant on the theme of Opportunity in Hong Kong, and she was the Gold Award recipient of the Media Art Category of the 26th ifva Award, Hong Kong in 2021. In addition to being a member of the Sangwoodgoon farming community since 2010, she uses photography, video, and installation as a means to interact with nature, in addition to engaging with topics of food, fermentation, surveillance, and meditation. Lo’s works have been exhibited at Wooferten (2010), WMA Space, Hong Kong (2020), Enclave Contemporary, Shenzhen (2023), and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (2021). This is Lo’s first biennial exhibition, and first exhibition in South Asia.
