Nigar’s contribution to LB03 dives deep into the extractive practice of mining and its lasting impact on people and the environment. Into the Earth is a mixed-media installation that draws on the artist’s teenage experience working in the coal mines in his hometown. On the wall, a video immerses viewers in the oppressive conditions of a coal mine, capturing the claustrophobic sensations that miners experience going to work underground.  Placed on the ground is an arrangement of coal, atop of which are scattered black and white portraits of miners and other photographs from the surroundings. While they are no bigger than lumps of coal, the photographs are a poignant reminder that mining involves not just “natural resources,” but also entire communities.    

 

In contrast to the harsh conditions of the mines, The Blinks shows the humanity of local children at play.  Nigar records them as they try to keep their eyes open as long as possible without blinking. As the viewer looks on, they look back at us, creating a connection, even if only virtual and momentary–some squirm and smile, some cover their faces, and one of the boys shed tears. The Blinks is a candid collective portrait of people in the artist’s hometown and their resilience.

 

Niamat Nigar lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan. He graduated from the National College of Arts, Lahore with distinction in 2021. In addition to making paintings and studio work, he has also conducted art workshops for children in his hometown, Loralai, in Balochistan, aimed at inspiring younger generations.  In addition to exhibiting nationally, he recently completed residencies at Gasworks in London and at VASL Artists’ Association in Karachi.

نگار کا لاہور بینالے کے لیُے بنایُ گیُ تنصیب “انٹو دی ارتھ” کان کنی کی سخت مشکلات اور اس کا لوگوں اور ماحول پر پڑنے والے منفی اثرات پر روشنی ڈالتی ہے۔ یہ تنصیب فنکار کے اپنی نوجوانی میں لورالائی میں کوئلے کی کانوں میں کام کرنے کے  ذاتی تجربے پر مبنی ہے۔ اس تنصیب میں ایک ویڈیو شامل ہے جو ناظرین کو خوفِ محصوری کی کیفیت میں لے جاتی ہے۔ اس ویڈیو میں کان کنوں کے تجربات کو دکھایا گیا ہے۔ اس میں تصاویر بھی شامل ہیں، جو یہ ظاہر کرتی ہیں کہ نہ صرف کان کنی کے دوران قدرتی وسائل کی قربانی دی جاتی ہے، بلکہ مقامی کمیونٹیز بھی منفی اثرات کا سامنا کرتی ہیں۔

اس کے ساتھ ساتھ، نگار کا دوسرا کام، “دی بلنکس” ان کے آبائی شہر کے مقیم بچوں کی خوش مزاجی اور انسانیت پر توجہ دیتا ہے۔ یہ ویڈیو مقامی بچوں کی انسانیت اور ثابت قدمی کو ایسے پیش کرتی ہے کہ ناظریں اور ان بچوں کے درمیان ایک مختصر لیکن گہرا تعلق قائم ہو جاتا ہے۔

نعمت نگار لاہور میں مقیم پاکستان کے ایک فنکار ہیں۔ انہوں نے 2021 میں نیشنل کالج آف آرٹس سے امتیازی کارکردگی کے ساتھ گریجویشن کی۔ اپنے اسٹوڈیو فن کے کام کے علاوہ، وہ اپنے بلوچستان کے آبائی شہر لورالائی میں بچوں کے لیے آرٹ ورکشاپس بھی منعقد کرتے ہیں۔ ان کا فن قومی سطح پر نمائشیں کیا جا چکا ہے اور حال ہی میں انہوں نے لندن میں “گیس ورکس” اور کراچی میں “وسل آرٹسٹس ایسوسی ایشن” میں ریزیڈنسی مکمل کی۔
