Stolon Press’s Hustle Culture is a record made of the daily life around three bird baths placed under a chaste tree and a tamarind tree, in a small garden, in a small town in Malaysia. The visitors to the baths vary—sunbirds, fantails, swallows, an occasional tailorbird, maybe even a kingfisher or oriole, a toad, as well the neighborhood’s fat cat. The baths are washed and refilled regularly, sometimes there are no visitors at all, save for a floating feather; the camera is too slow or too fast, too impatient, or badly positioned. Instead of a story or plot, there is rhythm, fluttering, and a daily patterning.  The video is accompanied by an eponymous publication produced with typists in Lahore.

Gill’s Fall Then, made in the same garden as Hustle Culture, comprises a large series of one-to-one scale direct impression ink rubbings of flora found in Malaysia. The plants recorded, such as giant macarangas, rubber trees, lead trees, tapiocas, ferns, Lalang grass, acacias, papayas, hanging vines, have been variously or concurrently described as native, domestic, introduced, invasive, pioneer, or endemic. Together, these plants envelop the viewer in a contradictory and exuberant wildness, and serve as a stark reminder of the permanent consequences of colonialism and the everlasting effects of humanity’s actions upon our environment.  Displayed with the Akbari Mahal, the work also reads as an update on the vegetal motifs found in wall decorations.

Simryn Gill (b. 1960) is a Singapore-born Sydney-based artist renowned for her artistic practice, which encompasses photography, installation, sculpture, and printmaking, often exploring themes of cultural identity, migration, and the environment. Gill has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Sydney Biennale, Singapore Biennial, Documenta, Istanbul Biennial, and Venice Biennale. Stolon Press was started in Sydney in 2019 by Tom Melick and Simryn Gill as a way to publish texts and images that might easily fall through cracks or remain in boxes and bottom drawers. Its growing list of titles follows the paths of friendships and longstanding conversations.

فنکارہ سمرین گِل (پیدائش 1960) سنگاپور میں پیدا ہوئیں اور اب سڈنی میں مقیم ہیں۔ ان کا کام فوٹوگرافی، تنصیبات، مجسمہ سازی، اور پرنٹ میکنگ پر مشتمل ہے۔ ان کے فن پارے اکثر ثقافتی شناخت، ہجرت، اور ماحولیات جیسے موضوعات پر روشنی ڈالتے ہیں۔ سمرین گل نے سڈنی بینالے اور وینس بینالے جیسے بڑے عالمی مواقع پر اپنے فن پاروں کی نمائش کی۔
