Akbari Mahal
The Akbari Mahalat are among the oldest structures within the Lahore Fort. The area designated by Emperor Akbar for his residence is known as the Akbari Mahal (Urdu: اکبری محل), encompassing the surroundings of the Akbari Gate, the ground floor of Haveli Kharak Singh, the Akbari Hammam, Diwan-e-Aam, Daulat Khana-e-Khas-o-Aam, and the garden area in front of the Diwan-e-Aam. Built during Akbar’s reign (1542–1605), the palace reflects early Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles. Although much of the complex is currently undergoing restoration, it was once part of Akbar’s grand plan to fortify and beautify the Lahore Fort. The Akbari Mahal likely served as a royal residence for the Mughal family and officials, with its chambers, courtyards, and halls exemplifying the splendour of Mughal architecture. Its prime location within the fort underscores its importance in the royal complex.
