artSPEAK | The Artist-in-Residence
TalkIn keeping with global trends, the Pakistani art scene has recently experienced a significant rise in local residencies, with VASL, the Sanat Initiative Residency and the Murree Artists Residency being a few examples. Such programs are a significant feature of the contemporary art world as they enable practitioners to spend time in a space removed from their everyday environment. This mode of learning can provide opportunities for the artist to explore their subject, untethered from any preconceived notions or standard methodology.
Basir Mahmood is a graduate of Beaconhouse National University and a fellow of the Akademie Schloss Solitude, in Stuttgart, Germany. He has also participated in the Gasworks Artist’s Residency and his work in video, film and photography has been shown at Time of others, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2015), Des hommes, des mondes at college des bernardins, Paris (2014), the Sharjah Biennial 11. (2013) and The Garden of Eden, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012), amongst many others. Most recently, he was shortlisted for the Abraaj Group Art Prize, 2016.
Dr. Razia Sadik is an art educator, scholar and curator currently based in Lahore. She is a founding member and the Director of the Centre for Art and Design Education and Research (CADER), School of Visual Arts, Beaconhouse National University. Moreover, she co-founded the graduate degree program for art educators at the same, a program that is the first of its kind in Pakistan. Prior to that Dr. Sadik has taught various courses at Columbia University, New York, the State University of New York and The National College of Arts, Lahore to name a few. She herself received her doctorate in Art Education from Teachers College at Columbia University, in addition to an M.A. and PgDip. from Central Saint Martins in London. Her research interests include studio-based research methodology, critical pedagogy, curriculum studies and curatorial practices, amongst several others and she has been published a number of times.
Saba Khan is a Lahore-based artist with an MFA from Boston University. Last year, she was awarded a scholarship to attend Vermont Studio Centre in the United States. She has participated in residency programs in Italy and India, in addition to winning the UNESCO Aschberg Bursary Award for the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Italy. Her work has been shown in Karachi, Lahore, Kathmandu, Dubai, Bangkok and New York. She was most recently shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in 2012 and founded the Murree Museum Artists Residency.
