Art in varying forms has always been present in the cultural fabric of cities, and cities themselves have made their imprint in art by influencing and inspiring artists. Art can be a window offering a glimpse into how cities are experienced and imagined in the minds of artists as well as ordinary citizens and reflects their relationship with their city.
The cultural heritage of a city influences the lived experience it offers to its inhabitants. It also influences and sometimes shapes the production and practice of art as it evolves in relation and response to it. The tangible heritage of the city, its landmarks and historic avenues, act as shared anchor points in history yet the social memory of these places differs in the mind of every individual. The relationship between the materiality and the sensory experience of the city often gives rise to new and diverse forms of creativity and artistic practices. This project will map the creative process of how the city emerges as character and co-creator alongside the artist in the process of creating artwork. It will create the opportunity to explore and present on the Virtual Museum platform, diverse artistic practices, across different mediums, that have emerged from within the city of Lahore.
The Lahore Biennale Foundation and Dr. Razia Iram Sadik are seeking young, local artists to feature in their project investigating ‘Post Modern and Contemporary Movements in Visual Arts and Other Creative Forms’. This project will explore how art is not only made in the city but also with the city, by shadowing the creative processes of the selected local artists across Lahore. Through this documentary approach the project will trace artists’ relationship with their surroundings–materials available and used, locations frequented, sites of inspiration and research, and their thinking process as they navigate these elements. The outcome of documenting artists at work with and in the city will be in the form of a short documentary that will be featured on the Lahore Biennale Foundation’s (upcoming) Virtual Museum.
Considerations:
- Applicants must be based in Lahore
- Applicants must be Visual Artists (Also open to interdisciplinary artists, working across mediums)
- Applicants must be comfortable with their process and work being filmed
- This is a featuring opportunity for emerging as well as established artists
- Selected artists will be given a small production budget for the work they execute for this project.

- A photo-essay on the above mentioned theme (7 photos max.)
- A short statement detailing their objective in joining the project including a paragraph on the kind of project they would develop (250-300 words max.)
- A CV and portfolio

Dr. Razia Sadik is an Associate Professor at the Syed Ahsan Ali & Syed Maratib Ali School of Education, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) where she teaches courses in Arts Education, Slow Looking and Curriculum Design. Her professional practice and research interests are in arts higher education, teacher education, critical pedagogy, arts-based educational research, and critical curatorial practice. She is interested in researching the learning of adults, particularly artists and teachers at work. Her curatorial work aims to extend art as a mode of inquiry to communities through gallery and museum education. Dr. Sadik received her doctorate in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, her MA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts (UAL) London, and her undergraduate from the NCA, Lahore.
The Lahore Biennale Foundation is partnering with the British Council to develop the LBF Virtual Museum.
